If you like chocolate, you will love one of my favorite smoothie recipe, the Chocolate “Milkshake” (my kids call it the Chunky Monkey!). So yummy! While most people reach for that extra afternoon cup of coffee, I usually get my fix from this chocolatey smoothie, which tastes and invigorates so much better than coffee. It’s healthy, energizing and without the inflammatory sugar and dairy to boot. Full of plant proteins and good fats, it will give you the jolt you are looking for and satisfy your sweet tooth! I’m super psyched when my daughter gulps the entire serving for an after school snack. I actually mentally high five myself for sneaking goodies like hemp seeds and almond butter into her diet. This also makes a fantastic quick breakfast that you can whip up in 2 two minutes or less. Chocolate for breakfast? I would absolutely offer my kids this chocolate smoothie for breakfast, it beats all the artificial crap found in breakfast cereals and frozen waffles. You can also enjoy this heavenly concoction as a post workout drink as it will replenish your body with the protein and fats that it needs and wants. Be prepared to get addicted!
What’s so good about it?
The star of this recipe is the raw chocolate powder, which is 100% pure cacao powder, much different from the sweetened stuff we usually mix into hot chocolate. Lets face it, there is something special about a food that most women would choose over sex (so I hear!). Raw chocolate is simply the bean of the cacao plant, unadulterated and with all the antioxidants, mineral and health rejuvenating benefits intact. It is extremely rich in antioxidants, which protect our DNA from free radical damage, magnesium, iron, good source of fiber and polyphenols. I could go on and on but the most important fact you need to know is that chocolate has incredible health building nutrients and feel good properties (tryptophan) to make this (raw) superfood a staple in your diet. So please splurge sometimes and buy pure cacao powder and not the processed, sweetened stuff.
Hemp seeds are the other secret ingredient. They have many amazing properties but in my opinion are greatly underappreciated. First of all, hemp seeds are a great source of plant protein with all the essential amino acids to make it a complete, easy to digest protein. This makes it a perfect food source for someone who wants to eat a clean diet, low on the food chain and move away from animals as the primary protein source. Hemp seeds contain magnesium, iron, potassium as well as other minerals and have the perfect balance of Omega 6 and Omega 3’s fatty acids. In a nutshell, the perfect food to add to your pantry.
